MTB 12-hour: A new perspective.

This weekend, the local mountain bike club (the Central Australian Rough Riders) held an event called the Firefly, a 12-hour enduro race. It was an overnighter, starting at 7pm and finishing up at 7am, meaning that riders were racing through the night with lights.

Since we've been living in Alice Springs, we have done a bit of mountain biking, but haven't yet got involved in events or the club. So going along to the Firefly to support a friend of ours felt like a new experience. Here we were, going to a cycling event that neither of us were participating in; neither of us had any part in organising; and we didn't really know a lot of people there. Although, it turned out we knew quite a few people there in the end.

For our friend, it was his first MTB race and first enduro race. He did really well to push through the tiredness and mental fatigue to place third in his category and exceed his goal of riding more than 100km - another first!

And for us, as spectators, it was almost a novelty to kick back in our camp spot, chat, cheer on the riders and relax - and, of course, support our friend as well. (Although, once I got settled in our swag, I found it hard to wake up! Luckily they weren't relying on me to be awake...)

The event itself was well run, from the sounds of it the course was pretty sweet, and the atmosphere was really laid back and friendly.

To top it off, we got to camp out less than five kilometres from home and watch the sunrise.

And next time, I'm definitely going to ride.

  1. Lovely story. So pleased you have met some of the Ca Rough Riders.

I first rode MTBs with Rough Riders, and I clearly remember the elation at having achieved a personal goal such as did your friend. For me, it was a 5-day enduro, and though I was at the social end of the pack throughout, it was nonetheless important I achieved that goal.

Enjoy the next event as a rider.

  2. Thanks for stopping by, Gary!

It's great to have goals to work towards, and the great thing about MTB goals is that they are fun! :)

We are planning to head across to the Scott 24-hr in ACT, an event that I've ridden in teams of all sizes! It's always good fun.

Hope you have some happy trails ahead!
