The Alice Springs Show is on this weekend, and it's an event that really brings together the whole community. People travel from stations and bush communities from all around Central Australia to spend two days of good old-fashioned country show fun. There's cattle, poultry, dogs, horses, parades, a Show Girl contest, agriculture, hobbies, cakes, craft, sideshow alleys, scary rides and - of course - donuts and dagwood dogs.
Tonight, for the first time (apparently) there was a rodeo. We stayed in the cold to watch a little bit, but with our toasty warm jackets left in the car (a mile away) we decided enough was enough. Tomorrow we'll head back to look through the pavilions of craft, cakes, produce and hobby stalls. Here are some of my photos from today.
I love these! This reminds me so much of when I moved to Roma and they had the Show on the weekend I arrived. It was such an introduction to country life - the stock shows, cowboy boots and hats, the machinery displays, people who'd obviously travelled huge distances into town for the event. It was great!
ReplyDeleteThanks Prue! It's such a 'thing', the country show. I love the animal pavilions and you're right - so many people travel such large distances for show weekend. So different to the hyper-commercialised city shows (like the Sydney Royal Easter Show) even though they started out as Ag shows!
